The Strathfield District Historical Society is a non-profit, community based local organisation. The Society was established in 1978 with the objective of preserving documents, photographs and records relating to the history of the Strathfield District.
The Strathfield District Historical Society Newsletter is published on a bi-monthly basis for members of the Society. The Newsletter usually contains research relevant to the history of Strathfield. Topics of newsletters include:
- Histories of heritage properties of Strathfield.
- Histories of parks and streets
- Research on prominent residents of Strathfield’s past, which includes mercantile families such as Arnott’s, David Jones and Grace Brothers.
The Society hosts and funds a website, which features a wide variety of articles on local history. This site has received thousands of visitors and provides a useful source of information for students, family researchers and people with general interest in history and heritage.
The Society’s collection is housed in the Local Studies Room of Strathfield Library, 65-67 Rochester Street, Homebush. Collections include books, subject files, photographs and maps. Access to collections must be organised through the Society’s Secretary.
The Society hosts a lecture series each year featuring prominent speakers discussing architecture, garden history or showing of occasional films. Lectures are held at Strathfield Library on the first Saturday of March, May, July, September and November and open to all members of the community to attend.
The Society holds occasional bus or walking tours of Strathfield and participates in events during the Heritage Festival each year.
The Society is funded entirely from membership fees and donations.
The Society provides assistance to the local community and participates in historical and heritage activities in Strathfield.
The Strathfield District Historical Society is affiliated with the Royal Australian Historical Society and the Australian Garden History Society. Patron of the Society is the Mayor of Strathfield. ABN No: 55 648 380 254.
